New Car Seat Standards Leave Parents Upset

The American Academy of Pediatrics has released a new set of recommedations for child safety seats, which recommends that children remain rear-facing until at least age two.  According to a Washington Post article, this is upsetting many local parents, who are wondering whether they will have to purcahse new seats.  The two largest complaints from parents are that (1) the child gets fussier quicker in the rear-facing seat and (2) there simply isn't enough leg-room in the rear-facing seat.

This recommendation is just that - a recommendation - and does not have the power of law.  We have a write-up on Virginia car seat laws here.  If you have a new child or a new safety seat and want to make sure that it's properly installed, you can take it to a local police station.  Here is a list of police stations in Fairfax performing safety seat checks.
